Zozulka began in 2011 as a trio born out of Hilka, the ensemble that performed the Chornobyl Songs Project. Zozulka features Eva Salina, Willa Roberts (of Black Sea Hotel), and myself. We started by exploring lyrical and ritual songs from the Poltava and Polissia regions of Ukraine, but have more recently branched out to sing repertoires drawn from Maria’s fieldwork in Hutsulshchyna, and—in the BEREZA/BERYOZE song cycle, Yiddish songs with a connection to Ukraine. We have performed at venues ranging from The Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Museum of Jurassic Technology, Golden Fest, University of Toronto, Cornelia Street Cafe, Opus 40, Grazhda, and the backyard of the Suminski Innski.
